Hi,
This is Vidula Kulkarni.
I am an Urban Planning student, studying at one of the colleges in Vancouver.
I am currently doing an academic project on barrier-friendly parks and playgrounds (Project duration is 3 months and at the end of the project, I am planning to assess the performance of selected parks and playgrounds (neighbourhood level) and assign them rankings, which will help people decide which park to choose. I am currently taking into consideration physical and sensory disabilities.
For my study, I am referring American Disability Act for Playgrounds (ADA), City guidelines for barrier friendly designs of Parks (Universal Design Checklists for City Parks), Guidelines provided by the play equipment companies, case studies of actual barrier friendly parks, Rick Hansen Toolkit and Radical Accessible Communities Audit Tool.
For my project, along with my secondary research, literature review and site visits, inputs/ experience sharing by experts and users are extremely important.
These perceptions/ pointers for barrier friendly parks will help me further understand the current gaps and how a city can improve its park to make it more inclusive.
I would highly appreciate your views on this subject.
You can definitely share what you would like in an ideal inclusive playground / park, what can I consider while assessing parks’ performance or any other relevant input?
This study is purely for an academic purpose and is limited to my college project.
I sincerely thank you.
Vidula
Hi Vidula, that sounds fantastic! Have you done any outreach to other disability groups? There are a lot of folks who i’m sure would be into providing input.
